Well it was a crazy weekend of skateboarding for the guys at the Maloof Money Cup. The first day was hot as hell, and the second day almost ended early because of an approaching storm. Good weather or bad, these skaters were determined to win some cash money. After the first day of skating it [...]

Gou Miyagi – The Mr. Miyagi Of Skateboarding

Posted By boardexistence on May 15th, 2010

If you’ve already seen Gou Miyagi in his 6 minute video hit titled “Overground Broadcasting” you know what you are about to see and are probably already clicking the play button. I can’t blame you, I would do the same thing. When I first saw his video I couldn’t stop the urge to watch it again, and it isn’t often I find a video that makes me hit the rewind button this much, but Gou Miyagi has an original style that should make even the seasoned skater’s jaw drop. He has technical skills and he shows them off, but his skating centers around having fun, expressing himself, and skating how he wants to skate.

Slap Magazine has an interview with Gou Miyagi that is definitely worth taking the time to check out. After watching the video it wasn’t surprising to discover that he was first inspired to skateboard after reading a comic book where a skateboarder escapes police by grinding down rails (notice some of the comic book effects in the film). Miyagi is 32 and Japanese so I can’t imagine Bart Simpson was his inspiration, but he doesn’t say. Some things you might be interested to know more about are his special carpet grip tape and signature “Go Miyagi” wax.

Birdhouse Skateboards East Coast Tour

Posted By boardexistence on May 12th, 2010

I hope you have 15 minutes to spare because Birdhouse posted video from their East Coast Tour to Vimeo. It has everything from parks to vert ramps, and if you are big Tony Hawk fan the Birdman is in this video along with his son Riley Hawk who also skates for Birdhouse.

William Spencer – Skate Ninja

Posted By boardexistence on May 8th, 2010

Maybe you caught William Spencer’s part in the video Hollarado which sparked such youtube comments as,

“how the fuck does he do half that stuff man”

“i dont know what the hell he is doing but its awesome and unique”

“fuck circus skating”

If you’ve already watched the video then you understand what’s with all the comments. Spencer does unique skateboarding tricks, and he seems pretty humble about the attention his skate antics have brought upon him.  He skates for fun and not for a sponsorship.   The negative comments haven’t stopped his fun either, and by the looks of it may have inspired him in the release of this newest video.

Oh, you’re a legit skater and you don’t like circus tricks? Oh well!

I caught wind of this video via Skateboarding Magazine, and I have to say they hit the nail on the head when they said that this is what makes skateboarding better than any other sport.  I’m with the with William Spencer on this one, if you don’t like circus tricks, oh well.

Neil Blender – 1985

Posted By boardexistence on May 6th, 2010

I have a thing for old school skate videos. It’s probably because I grew up in the 80s when skateboarding was at its awkward phase in its history. This Neil Blender video from 1985 is a perfect example of what was so great about the time. In a two minute skateboard session the legendary Neil Blender starts out with what looks to be a typical flatland routine, riding up some mini ramps, when out of nowhere he is lying on the ground with the board resting on his leg. I’ve honestly never seen a skateboarder do this in my life as far as I know. Then again this was a video of the guy who invented the lien air. Needless to say, I couldn’t help but wonder where this going. Anyway, I’m not one to spoil a good video, so click the play button and watch for yourself.

10 Tricks With Garrett Hill

Posted By boardexistence on May 5th, 2010

Fallen skater Garrett Hill shares with us 10 of his favorite tricks. If the tricks weren’t sick enough by themselves, the music and camera work on this short clip really are a treat from the typical short and sloppy promo clips. I can’t blame him for wanting his favorite tricks to look as good as they can. Hopefully you’ll appreciate them as much as I did.

Welcome To America Ben

Posted By boardexistence on May 3rd, 2010

As I was browsing Thrasher Magazine earlier watching some videos, I couldn’t help but drool over some of Ben Raemers skate spots in this éS video clip. They remind me of some of the little hidden gems that were hiding all over Stanford University (look for a secret half pipe off Page Mill Road). I’m amazed how the non-skater totally misses these natural wonders of architecture, and with the right skateboarder you can’t help but notice.  Be sure to check Ben’s interview over at éS.

Circa Rider David Reyes Gets Kinky

Posted By boardexistence on May 2nd, 2010

I caught wind of this video clip via a post over at C1RCA’s website. It has some nice variety for being under 2 minutes long, and shows off some especially badass grinds on various kinked rails. I know for me it took me months before I had the balls to try my first boardslide. I never even got close to a kinked rail (my insurance provider thanks me). I have a lot of respect for guys like David Reyes who can make hitting kinks like these look so easy. I guess when you are this good though there isn’t much to be afraid of.

The Road To Ruins

Posted By boardexistence on May 1st, 2010

The guys from Ruins Board Shop finished up their annual trip from Terrace, B.C. to Vancouver. By the looks of it they definitely had fun, but I’m sure there is a part of them that is happy to home. Rather than sit on their asses when they got back the guys were cool enough to post some pictures from their trip, and a video on youtube which you can watch below. Be warned there is corny music, belching, and foul language. Enjoy.

Toronto Tontos

Posted By boardexistence on April 30th, 2010

Here is an entertaining 3 minute video clip starring: Paul Liliani, Pat O’Rourke, Adam Mancini, Dallas Hansen, and Jeff Comber of Green Apple Skateboard Shop. What I like in particular about this the grainy homemade feel in the video. Sure high quality production videos look nice, but videos like this make me want to grab my board and join em in a session.
